Koln/Cologne - Germany

Cologne is the non-European way of saying and spelling Koln. When you arrive, especially via the train, you should keep your eyes open for signs that read Koln. This magnificent place is one of Germany’s oldest cities. Home to stunning architecture, world-renowned museums and amazing shops, guests will find much to see and explore.

The Koln Cathedral is a fantastic building that commands your attention when you enter the city. It took over 600 years to build and was designated as a UNESCO world heritage site. On the outside you’ll see beautiful stain glass windows and amazing details from the spires to the outside walls. You may want to walk around the church before you enter, just to get a better idea as to how large it really is. Once inside, you’ll be treated to the Cathedral treasures. And if you’re able to, make the trek up the 509 steps to the top and get the best view of Koln. This cathedral is filled with history. Although you may see it from a distance as you explore the city, you’ll only get a feeling for what it’s really all about when you enter inside and see the architectural beauty up close.

Koln is also home to many fantastic museums. One of these is the Romisch-Germanisches Museum which features a huge collection of Roman artifacts found along the Rhine. Another top museum is the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, home to a stunning collection 13th-19th century art. For those who think Chocolate should be designated as its own food group, it’ll be a must to visit the Schokoladen Museum, a museum dedicated to the art of chocolate making. And yes, it is an art.

To see an amazing view of the city hop on a river cruise along the Rhine. There are many day trips available and it really does offer a great tour of the city. When you’re on the cruise, keep an eye open for streets like Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse. These two streets are a shopper’s paradise as you stroll along and find amazing deals on fashion’s biggest trends.

End your day in Altstadt (old town). You’ll find a great place to grab a bite to eat or enjoy the hometown beer called K?lcsh. The historic city area is located along the Rhine and showcases great pubs, restaurants and places to hear jazz. Need a bit more? The discotheques in Koln are one of a kind. The techno music pumps through the air and gives you energy until the wee hours of the morning.
